Sure, we’ve all played Kaytranada’s 2016 album ‘99.9%’ to death, because it’s outrageously good. However, we thought it was worth taking a moment to reflect on how we (maybe not some of you though) first came to hear of the Canadian / Haitian super producer.
His take on Janet Jackson’s ‘If’ has now amassed nearly 7 million listens on his Soundcloud page. We’re probably responsible for 0.1% of those plays which is interestingly the amount that’s missing for the full 100% in his album title. Probably a subliminal message to us there somewhere…
Aaanyway, this remix was no fluke, it’s an approach that he’s tried and tested on many other great R&B tunes. Check this monster interpretation on the already monstrous ‘Sock It 2 Me’ by Missy Elliott:
Next up he’s doing his thing on Amerie’s ‘Why Don’t We Fall In Love’ summoning (albeit subtly) the powers of Daft Punk.
There’s an interesting point to this pattern though which the ever brilliant Benji B highlighted on his Radio 1 show this week. The majority of the big R&B tunes from the 90s and early 2000s when they got their vinyl release had four versions: Radio Edit, Club Edit, Instrumental and… Acapella. So there you are, a ready supply of studio quality vocals ripe for remixing. Well, true to form, Kaytranada’s been at it again, this time on Latrelle’s 2001 track ‘House Party’.
