Roy Davis Jr. – Gabriel feat. Peven Everett

#Flashback We could listen to this on an all day loop, and quite often do. Today of all days you should do the same

Quite possibly the defining tune of our university experience, it’s now 20 years since those smart cookies at XL signed and released the track ‘Gabriel’ by Roy Davis Jr. featuring vocals from Peven Everett.

We could listen to this on an all day loop, and quite often do. Today of all days you should do the same.

The Prodigy – Experience

#Flashback It’s rave time people and after 25 years this album is still an essential entry point to the sound of the UK in 92

It’s rave time people and after 25 years The Prodigy’s debut album release ‘Experience’ is still an essential entry point to the sound of the UK in 92.

Single releases from the album spanned a near two years either side of the official release date with ‘Charly’ coming out in August 91 and a remix of ‘Wind It Up’ coming out in April 93.

It’s the classic ‘Out of Space’ with its Max Romeo sample that everyone instantly recognises though.

M.I.A. – Kala

#Flashback The album that vaulted M.I.A. forward on the global music scene; ‘Kala’ celebrates its tenth anniversary this week

The album that vaulted M.I.A. forward on the global music scene; ‘Kala’ celebrates its tenth anniversary this week.

Undoubtably the biggest track to come from the album was the monster single ‘Paper Planes’ with its sample of The Clash song ‘Straight to Hell’.

Jai Paul – Jasmine

#Flashback Where is Jai Paul? We don’t know, but we do know Jasmine came out 5 years ago. Let’s recap

The second release from the enigma that is Jai Paul came out 5 years back now. ‘Jasmine’ is softer and sweeter than ‘BTSTU’ but still has that unquestionable Jai Paul sound.

The guy has 17 thousand followers on Twitter, has only tweeted once (to tell us that his ‘album’ that got released wasn’t actually official) and has only released 2 singles yet every knows him. The question remains though “Where is Jai Paul?”

SL2 – On A Ragga Tip

#Flashback So the clothes and the dance moves maybe date the video, but we are still struggling to believe this tune hit the stores 25 years back

Listen to SL2’s ‘On A Ragga Tip’ and have a think about how long ago it came out. Go on, do it.

Ok, so the clothes and the dance moves maybe date the video, but we are still struggling to believe this tune hit the stores 25 years back (of course it was on XL – they know their ish). Still shutting down dances worldwide with no sign of stopping.

New Gen (XL compilation)

This one got a lot of plays last week. Titan trendsetters XL have put out a compilation of tracks representing the UK’s music scene right now! Originally a playlist put together by GRM Daily Editor; Caroline Simionescu-Marin focussing on the output of New Gen Studio, it’s now a fully formed album.

Sonically it’s more than just grime. Check the Nina Simone ‘Sinnerman’ sample on Jevon’s ‘Man of the Hour’ and the laid back reggae feel of ‘Ring The Alarm’ from Avelino & Tiggs.
